Weeds: Identifying and Controlling

Weed Identification

IPM Weed Identification

The UC IPM Weed Photo Gallery includes many, but not all, weed species commonly found in California farms and landscapes.

Identification Key

This key includes the most common weeds found in California lawns. Other species may occur but are not of major importance in turf. Because flowering parts are often mowed and not seen in turf, this key was developed using vegetative characteristics. Identifying weed species is essential for choosing appropriate management practices.

List of Weeds

The UC IPM Weed Photo Gallery includes many, but not all, weed species commonly found in California farms and landscapes.  Additional species will be added over time.

Principles of Weed Control

In order to control weeds, you must first understand the principles of ecology that dictate how weeds interact in the environment. Joe DiTomaso and a cast of UC Davis experts take us on a tour of these basic concepts.

Part 1 Introduction, preventing weeds through sanitation (5:43)

Part 2 Competition in landscapes and lawns, annuals and perennial (9:43)

Part 3 Weed seed bank (7:46)

Part 4 Controlling annual and perennial weeds. perennial reproductive structures (8:28)

Part 5 Mowing or post-emergence herbicide control, conclusion (4:13)

Weed Control Techniques

These videos describe different strategies for controlling weeds in landscapes and gardens. An array of experts and researchers discuss both chemical and non-chemical methods that include: mechanical, cultural, biological and herbicide control. Special attention is paid to herbicides and how to achieve selectivity and calibrate them.

Part 1 Mechanical control, cultural techniques, turf control (13:55)

Part 2 Biological control, chemical pathway, formulations (11:56)

Part 3 Calibration (10:31)

Part 4 Selective application (7:57)
