University of California experts support front-of-package nutrition labels

To support healthier consumer choices, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has proposed mandatory front-of-package labels on packaged foods and beverages highlighting levels of nutrients to limit—saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars. The University of California Research Consortium on Beverages and Health submitted comments in support of the proposed rule but with several  recommended evidence-based amendments including a clear “high in” only label system, distinct icons for each nutrient of concern, inclusion of infant/toddler foods, a disclosure for non-sugar sweeteners, and a public education campaign. Dozens of countries have adopted front-of-package labeling, and over 100 studies show such labels improve food choices and drive product reformulation. The Consortium is coordinated by the Nutrition Policy Institute and consists of senior faculty across the UC system who study nutrition science, programs, and policies, with a focus on added sugars and sugary beverages.
