Workgroups

Workgroups are:
- Research and/or extension based groups that function as part of a Program Team (PT).
- Where individuals come together to plan, conduct, and implement projects.
- Time-limited, nimble, activity-directed groups that offer opportunities to address critical and emergent needs while promoting collaboration across California.
- Maintained and tracked by one or more PTs.
Role of Workgroup Chairs
- Communicate with the PT Leader(s)
- Facilitate WG meetings
- Keep the group accountable to the WG goals.
Forming a New Workgroup
- Identify and document a need with clear goals to be achieved in a timeline of 1 to 2 years.
- Identify a WG Chair and at least 5 members.
- Align with one or more PTs.
- Seek approval from the appropriate PT Leader(s). Once approved by the PT Leader(s), the WG may begin meeting, set group commitments, create a plan-of-action, and conduct activities.
Disbanding a Workgroup
At the conclusion of the identified timeline of 1-2 years, the WG members will reassess progress and do one of the following:
- Disband if goals are completed or
- Create a new plan of action and submit for approval by the PT Leader(s).
Funding
Workgroups are encouraged to meet in-person when their PT meet once per calendar year. No direct funding is available for WGs.
New for the 2025 programmatic restructure: WGs are not tracked by UC ANR, thus, WGs existing prior to July 1, 2025 will be subsumed into one or more appropriate PTs. Academics and relevant staff interested in joining a WG should contact the PT Leaders and/or the Program Area (PA) Chair.
