Research by the Nutrition Policy Institute’s CalFresh Healthy Living team highlights the importance of providing tailored resources and support for nutrition and physical activity in childcare settings to create equitable early childhood environments. CalFresh Healthy Living, known nationally as SNAP-Ed, implements health promotion interventions in childcare settings within low-income communities. This research explores how CFHL-eligible childcare sites adhere to nutrition and physical activity best practices, and how these practices differ between family childcare homes and childcare centers. Childcare sites reported an average of 65% of measured best practices to improve diet quality and 82% of best practices to promote physical activity. These results demonstrate the value of programs like SNAP-Ed, which can provide essential support with assessment, action planning, and technical assistance. The research brief was authored by NPI's Reka Vasicsek, Carolyn Rider, Summer Cortez, and Miranda Brown. The full peer-reviewed publication was authored by Vasicsek and colleagues.
