4-H has a rich and longstanding history in Kings County. While official records indicate that the first 4-H club in the county was chartered in 1938, it is estimated that youth participation in 4-H activities began as early as 1930. The Island 4-H Club holds the distinction of being the county’s longest continuously operating club, having been active every year since its founding in 1939.
All-Stars and Ambassadors
The Kings County 4-H Program is proud to foster strong leadership through the dedication and service of our senior youth members. The county’s first All-Star Team was established in 1939 with the selection of an All-Star Boy and an All-Star Girl. Over the past 85 years, this prestigious program has provided leadership development opportunities to 389 4-H members.
In recent years, California 4-H transitioned from the County All-Star program to the County Ambassador program in an effort to create greater consistency statewide. Kings County continued to operate both programs concurrently until 2024, when the Kings County 4-H Leaders Council voted to merge them into a single Ambassador Team. The unified program follows the eligibility criteria established by California 4-H for County Ambassadors while maintaining the year-long service commitment that was central to the All-Star experience. This structure ensures that participants who complete their term as Ambassadors remain eligible for the Marion Brazil Scholarship. The Kings County 4-H Ambassadorship is considered a working honor, recognizing youth who represent both the county and the broader 4-H program through leadership and service.
